How to Update Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 to 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Alpha Firmware Update

Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 owners will surely be delighted to know that they can finally upgrade their phone’s firmware to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. Even so, you have to keep in mind that you will be flashing an unofficial build from third-party developers. There’s no word as to when the official ICS firmware from Samsung gets launched.

Anyways, this custom ROM can only flashed on rooted handsets. Therefore, it is a must that you root your Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 with Android 2.3.5. If ever you decide to do so, please be aware that rooting can void the warranty of your phone. We also would like to express the potential risks that you might encounter during and after installation. Thus, flash at your own risk and do not blame us if anything bad happens to your phone.

But before we proceed, allow us to tell you that you won’t be able to use your phone’s camera, video recording, media playback, USB mass storage and audio. On the lighter side, you can basically use your handset’s touchscreen, SD card, Android Market, Google Sync, Bluetooth and Cell Radio. If you’re all set, you may continue reading the steps below.

Step 1: Download the Android 4.0.3 ICS Alpha Version for the Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 as well as the Google Apps Package. Save the files to your computer.

Step 2: Using a USB data cable, connect your handset to your computer. Copy the files that you have downloaded above and save to the root directory of your phone’s SD card. Once done, remove your handset from the computer then turn it OFF.

Step 3: Boot your phone to recovery mode. To do this, hold the Volume Down key along with the OK and Power buttons. If the phone boots in normal mode, repeat the same step until you get to recovery mode.

Step 4: In recovery mode, select ‘Install Zip from sd card’ then ‘Choose Zip from sd card’. Locate and select the file named as ‘CM9-GalaxySL-IML74K-Alpha1.zip’ and then select the file named ‘gappsv7.1.zip’.

Step 5: Wait until the installation completes. Your phone will reboot on its own. If it doesn’t, select ‘++++ Go Back ++++’ then select ‘Reboot System Now’.

Just follow the above steps carefully and you will be able to update the firmware of your Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich.
