How to Upgrade Motorola Droid 3 to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Using CyanogenMod 9


Do you want to upgrade your Motorola Droid 3 handset to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? If yes, you can easily to do so by following the steps that we are about to give in this post. Even so, we would like to remind you that this process involves the alpha version of the Cyanogenmod 9, a widely-known aftermarket ROM. We can’t guarantee that there won’t be any bugs or glitches but if you really want to taste the new features of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, you might as well take the risk.

But before you proceed to the steps, you must make sure that your Motorola Droid 3 has been rooted. In addition, see to it that there aren’t any Bootstrap apps installed on your phone. You will also need a Windows-based computer and at least 170MB of free space in your SD card storage. Also, keep in mind that you must have a fully charged Droid 3 handset.

Step 1: Download and install the SafeStrap app to your Motorola Droid 3. You can download the file at this link.

Step 2: Run the SafeStrap app then choose “Install Recovery”. A number will then appear at the bottom of your screen. If the number shown is 0.92, continue with the next step. If not, abort the process.

Step 3: Download the latest build of CyanogenMod 9 at this link then save to your PC.

Step 4: Connect your phone to your computer using a USB data cable. Copy the CM9 ROM that you have downloaded from Step 3. Save the file in the root directory of your phone’s SD card.

Step 5: Disconnect the phone from your computer.

Step 6: Turn off your phone then turn it back on. While booting up, you will see a splash screen. Once you get to see the splash screen, press the Menu key. This will boot your device to recovery mode.

Step 7: Create a backup of your Droid 3 by selecting the right options in your recovery mode menu. Once done, enable the “Safe System” option in the SafeStrap menu.

Step 8: Go to “Mount” menu then select “Format System”.

Step 9: Install the CyanogenMod 9 ROM. To do this, select “Install ZIP from SD card” then “Choose ZIP from SD card”. Locate and select the file for the CM9 ROM.

Step 10: Wait until the installation completes. Once done, select “Wipe data/factory reset” from the list of options. Reboot your Droid 3.

Just follow the steps above and you will be able to upgrade your Droid 3 handset to Android 4.0 ICS.
