Asus and Nvidia announced and showed what their latest venture is, a giant 7 inch Android powered tablet which they call the Transformer Prime fitted with a quad-core that is expected to be priced at around $249. Not much about the device was disclosed.
In their joint address, they had worked quite hard to get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to work properly on the new Asus Transformer Prime. The OS, they said, would be available for download free of cost from the day of the launch. The CEOs of Nvidia and Asus were present at the launch.
Transformer Prime is so far the only tablet to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. A semi working ICS version is although available. The features of this new Prime tablet include a mini-HDMI output and also a microSD slot. It has a 1280 x 800 Super IPS with a Gorilla Glass touch-screen. The tablet has a 1GB RAM and an 8MP camera. It also has a 1.2 MP front facing camera.
The platform now has more than 400,000 apps which are growing at a rate of 12,000 per month. These new applications are both abundant in number and also quite pleasing as compared to the apps available for the previous versions of Android. The Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to unify all the Android Devices by giving them a common platform. Nvidia announced that the new Tegra 3 chipset would help develop better tablets whose battery consumption would be much less than the others. Another notable feature shown was as how the Tegra 3 chipset changed the colors of the display as the backlight was slowly dimmed thus reducing the battery consumption.
As stated in the conference it is expected that Android OS would be the only alternative left for most of the tablets, which do not have an OS of their own.
