As far as our memory chips are concerned, we did tell you that HP has already abandoned its WebOS system. In fact, it’s been quite a while since that craze for the $99 16GB HP TouchPad. Then there was this CyanogenMod Team who were working to make the said tablet run on Android 2.3.5.
Back then, the project was still glitchy. But guess what? We’re here to report that the team has just released their latest CyanogenMod 7.1 Android Alpha 3 Update and you can now install this new build of Android in your HP TouchPad. You can even track their previous developments via RootzWiki. Just keep in mind that this release is still part of the Alpha stage and you may encounter some bugs or errors. If you’re willing to take the risk, then you can follow this step-by-step guide that will teach you how to install the said update on your slate.
There are lots of new things that you can expect from this update. You will no longer be bothered by the ‘sleep of death’, a glitch that usually prevents your tablet from resuming after sleep. Also, there are some sorts of general WiFi fixes alongside with a preliminary TouchPad 4G support. You can view the complete list of Alpha 3 developments below.
* Last prominent form of “sleep of death” resolved
* Smoother scrolling for Webkit backing store
* Bluetooth DPad/arrows do not rotate with screen
* Serial# now populated
* General wifi fixes
* Shorter hostname as a result of serial#
* Preliminary Touchpad 4G support (no radio)
* Possible fix for SD card not mounting
* Possible fix for A2DP and wifi interference
* Camera FPS improved but still nearly non-functional
* Status bar should take less resource after an app goes full screen
* Battery stats now available to Android
* Minor improvements to 2D/3D performance in some applications
What do you think about this update? Are you going to take some risks and have this installed?
