None can tell as to when the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Firmware upgrade will be made available to those with HTC Evo 4G smartphones. Instead of waiting in vain, you can manually update your handset’s firmware version to Android 4.0.1 ICS by following our guide below.
But before you read the first step, keep in mind that this isn’t the official version of Google’s Android 4.0.1 ICS. Instead, you will be flashing an alpha version of the firmware. In any case, we are not liable for any damages that could happen to your phone. You must be aware of the potential risks that you are going to encounter upon flashing this custom firmware version. Thus, it is very important that you keep a backup of your important files, messages, contacts, call logs, etc. We also assume that your phone’s battery level doesn’t go lower than 60% and that you have closed all your Firewall and Anti-Virus Suites in your computer. Once you’re all set, read on.
Step 1: Download the Android 4.0.1 ICS Package for HTC Evo 4G at this link and save to your computer. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable and copy the downloaded file and save to the root directory of your phone’s SD card storage. Once done, disconnect your phone from your computer.
Step 2: Enable USB Debugging by going to your phone’s Settings > Applications > Development then check the box next to the USB Debugging option.
Step 3: Turn off your handset then boot to recovery mode. To do this, hold the Volume Down key while pressing the Power Button. Your phone will be set to boot loader mode. In boot loader mode, tap ‘Recovery’ from the given set of options to go to recovery mode.
Step 4: In recovery mode, select ‘clear storage’ to delete all the cached data in your phone. Select ‘Install Zip from sd card’ then ‘Choose Zip from sd card’. Locate and select the file that you have copied from step one to begin the installation.
Step 5: After the installation, select ‘++++ Go Back ++++’ then choose ‘Reboot System Now’ to restart your phone.
Step 6: Check whether you have successfully installed the firmware. To do so, go to your phone’s Settings > About Phone then check the Firmware Version. You will know that you have successfully updated your HTC Evo 4G once you get to see that it is finally running on Android 4.0.1. If it doesn’t, you may need to repeat the steps that we have mentioned.
